Wine near the Rapallo Thermo Spas

This excellent winery is found near the famous thermo spas of Rapallo in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy - for a map of where this region is in Italy click here.

Ther owner of Cantina del Notaio is Gerardo whose family, the Giuratrabocchetti family, has been involved with wine production for generations. Gerardo, together with his wife Marcella, continue this tradition.

Because the challenge they set themselves, read below, was so mighty they roped in Professor Luigi Moio, one of southern Italy's leading wine experts to give a hand.

The Challenge

Gerardo's dream was to produce high quality wine in the Basilicata region with southern Italy's most venerated yet notoriously difficult grape, the Aglianico del Vulture.

After many years of struggle they succeded where very many have failed and now produce three superb red wine packed full of character, (La Firma, Il Repertorio and Il Sigillo), one rosé (Il Rogito) and a spumante Metodo Classico (La Stipula).

In addition they produce a classic sweet white wine made from Malvasia and Moscato grape varieties. This is a traditional wine from these parts and with centuries of tradition behind it the result is unsurprisingly excellent.

What's in a Name



The names of the wines may look familiar to anyone who has been through the property buying process in Italy and in fact they derive from the contractural process in Italy as handled by a notary public.

They are certainly unusual names and are a tribute by Gerardo to his father, a notary public, who inspired him to achieve so much and return to the traditions of the family.

Where to Stay

If you are visiting this part of the world then try to stay at the Terme di Rapallo in the thermo spa town of Rapallo. The hotel is only a little over two miles from Rionero in Vulture, it is not brilliant but it is the best option in the area and offers very good value.
